Otters Corner The Market But It’s Not Enough In OT Loss

CSUMB sets school record with 22 corner kicks but falls 1–0 to Academy of Art

SEASIDE, Calif. — Rarely will you see a team so thoroughly dominate a game on the field and walk away without at least a share of the spoils. But such are the vagaries of soccer and such was the nature of Saturday's 1–0 overtime defeat for Cal State Monterey Bay at the hands of Academy of Art at the Otter Sports Complex.

CSUMB collected an insane 22 corner kicks and out–shot ArtU 15–2. But the Urban Knights took advantage of one chaotic play as Oliver Hadeen came out of a turnover scramble at the top of the Otter box and slotted the only shot ArtU put on frame in the match past charging CSUMB goalkeeper Daniel Lomeli for the golden goal in the 94th minute.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… An Otter turnover near the centerline led to a long kick and a scramble at the top of the Otter box. ArtU's Oliver Hadeen ultimately found the handle, took a short dribble to a 1v1 with the Otter goalkeeper, and tucked the ball underneath him to end the match.

CORNERING THE MARKET… CSUMB's 22 corner kicks are—by far—the school record for corner kicks in a match. The Otters had 13 in a 3–2 win over Montana State Billings on Sept. 2, 2005.

CONFERENCE/NCAA RECORD? We're still researching the records for NCAA and CCAA, neither of which list corner kicks in their official record books. The NCAA does keep corner kicks as a record in NCAA Championship play, however, and that record is 19 by Seattle Pacific University back in 1983.

POSSESSION MAY BE 9/10THS OF THE LAW… but it didn't help the Otters in this match. CSUMB so dominated possession that it created 16 corner kicks in the second half alone. That averages to one corner kick every two minutes, 49 seconds.

IT'S NOT HOW MANY YOU TAKE… CSUMB's 15–2 shot advantage is the biggest disparity in shots in an Otter loss in school history. The last time CSUMB took as many as 15 shots without scoring in a match was a 0–0 draw with Chico State last season in which the Otter registered 16 shots.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: None; Assists: None; POINTS: None; SHOTS: Walmer Martinez 4; SAVES: None.

THE LAST WORD… "Hard loss to take considering the number of corners and shots on goal we created. Positive to create, but disappointing not to capitalize. We take away a lot of positives and this group is still coming together." – CSUMB Head Coach Shane Carew

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 3–match homestand by hosting Colorado School of Mines Friday, Sept. 7, at 4:00 p.m.
