More Heartbreak As Otters Fall To Mines In Final Minute Of Overtime

No. 8 Colorado School of Mines scores in the 88th, 110th minutes to take a 2–1 decision

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team gave another outstanding performance only to see the result slip away late as No. 8 ranked Colorado School of Mines scored in the waning minutes of regulation and again with 46 second remaining in overtime to snatch a 2–1 victory from the Otters Friday at the Otter Sports Complex.

The match was every bit as tight as the final score indicated and seemed destined to go CSUMB's way after Luis Lopez (De Anza HS) finished a tight passing play in the box by slotting his first goal of the season under a charging Mines goalkeeper in the 52nd minute. As Mines pressed forward for the equalizer, CSUMB's defense provided several opportunities to counter, but the Otter offense couldn't find the insurance marker.

That proved costly as Matthew Summerfield won a header challenge over CSUMB goalkeeper Daniel Lomeli (Alisal HS), just getting it past Lomeli's outstretched hands before it trickled just inside the far post in the 88th minute.

Two entertaining overtime periods featured end–to–end action before Lucas King came up with a the ball in the Otter half, dribbled to the arc and beat Lomeli to the far post with 46 seconds remaining to end the affair.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Lucas King scored the golden goal in the final minute of the second overtime.

EVEN STEVEN… The teams played to an almost statistical draw in terms of shots (17–14 CSM), saves (8–6 CSUMB) and corner kicks (6–5 CSM).

A WILD WAY TO OPEN THE SEASON… In case you're wondering, CSUMB has never opened the season with consecutive overtime matches in the 22–year history of Otter men's soccer.

AN OT TRIFECTA… Going back to 2017, when the Otters drew with No. 18 UC San Diego in the season finale, CSUMB has played three consecutive overtime matches. That hasn't happened since the Otters played to OT in five consecutive matches from Sept. 19 – Oct. 3, 2008.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Luis Lopez 1; ASSISTS: Walmer Martinez 1; POINTS: Luis Lopez 2; SHOTS: Steve Lopez 4; SAVES: Daniel Lomeli 8.

THE LAST WORD… "It was a really hard fought game against a proven top program in the nation. Hard to take losing in last minute, but these are all lessons we have to learn from quickly." – CSUMB Head Coach Shane Carew

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their season–opening 3–match homestand by hosting Holy Names University Sunday (Sept. 9). Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
