SEASIDE, Calif. — Sophomore
Hayley Fein (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) continued to round into the form that earned her CCAA Freshman of the Year honors in 2017 with a 3–hit win in Game 1 of Friday's doubleheader split with Cal State San Bernardino at the Otter Sports Complex. CSUMB took the opener 3–2 before San Bernardino rallied for a 9–0 win in the nightcap.
The series is big for both teams as each tries to play its way from the middle of the CCAA pack into a spot in the top four and a CCAA tournament bid. The split leaves the Otters at 9–10 in CCAA play while the Coyotes are now 10–10.
Fein has allowed just six earned runs in her last seven appearances, including three shutouts. Friday, she scattered three hits—two of them infield singles—and walked just one in earning her 12th win of the season.
Fein also helped herself at the plate with an RBI double in the second inning. The Otters also got RBI doubles from
Alyssa Burt (Garden Grove/Pacifica HS) and
Courtney Hennings (Amador Valley HS) to account for their three runs.
After surrendering a pair of runs in the first inning of the nightcap, the Otters got back–to–back singles to open their half of the first. But they did nothing with them as San Bernardino gradually pulled away to support the 6–hit shutout by Amanda Ramirez.
GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Hayley Fein needed just four pitches to set down the Coyotes in order in the seventh to preserve the 3–2 win.
GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… the Otters failed to score after getting a pair of base hits to lead off the first inning. Coyote starter Amanda Ramirez retired the next 11 Otters in order as San Bernardino extended its lead to 6–0 en route to the 9–0 win.
WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Hayley Fein's Game 1 victory was the 40th of her young Otter career. She becomes just the fourth pitcher in CSUMB history to record 40 victories.
POWER OUTAGE… The Otters have now gone 15 games without hitting a home run, the longest such streak in CSUMB history. The previous long power outage was a 12–game run from Mar. 13–27, 2015. It should be noted that the Otters went on to win the CCAA title that season.
POWER OUTAGE, PART II… The Otters have hit just 13 home runs through 33 games. They are on pace to hit 22, which would be their second–lowest total for a season.
LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Hayley Fein (7.0 IP, CG, 3 H, 2 R, 3 K, BB – 1x3, 2B, RBI);
Alyssa Burt (1x4, 2B, R, RBI);
Courtney Hennings (1x6, 2B, RBI);
Sierra Gonzalez (2x2)
THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4–game series versus the Coyotes with a doubleheader starting Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
GO OTTERS!
