SEASIDE, Calif. — Sophomore
Hayley Fein (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) tossed her fourth shutout of the season, this one a 2–hitter, and the Otter Garcias exploed for nine hits and nine RBI to lead Cal State Monterey Bay to a doubleheader split with Cal State San Bernardino for the second consecutive day Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex.
CSUMB took the opener 8–0 before San Bernardino rallied for four runs in the seventh inning to earn a 6–4 decision in the nightcap.
Senior
Julia Garcia (Oxnard HS/Ventura College) enjoyed her biggest day at the plate this season, finishing the doubleheader 5–for–6 with two doubles, a run scored and six RBI. Sophomore second baseman
Vanessa Garcia (Newhall/Heritage Christian HS) also had a breakout day, finishing 4–for–6 with a double, a stolen base, a run and three RBI.
The Otters got the only run they would need in the second inning of Game 1 when Fein came out of her flex spot to pinch hit for designated player
Nikki Jones (Cordova HS) in the second. Fein ripped a 2–out single through the right side to drive home
Vanessa Garcia, who had doubled.
Two runs in the fourth inning set the stage for a 5–run fifth which ended the game via run rule.
The nightcap was a wild affair that saw CSUMB take three separate leads, only to have San Bernardino answer each time. The Otters looked to have put the game away in the sixth when a sac fly by
Savanna Salyer Kovacs (Camarillo HS) and an RBI double by
Julia Garcia broke a 4–4 tie.
The Coyotes finally got to Fein in the seventh, however, with a couple of soft singles producing the first run and a pair of run–scoring doubles making it 6–4. CSUMB brought the tying run to the plate twice in the home half of the seventh but couldn't get the key hit it needed.
