SEASIDE, Calif. — Visiting Chico State used one big inning of offense and four innings of solid relief pitching to upset No. 20 Cal State Monterey Bay 8–3 Saturday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.
The game was originally scheduled to be part of a doubleheader, but with the teams dodging raindrops throughout the day, the nightcap was postponed with will now be played as part of a doubleheader Sunday.
For his part, CSUMB starter
Colton Fletcher (San Jose/Chico State) didn't pitch poorly, but Chico manufactured a run in the first inning on a pair of ground ball singles and a stolen base. The game slipped away in the fourth when a key throwing error and a misplayed bunt attempt opened the floodgates on a 5–run Wildcat outburst.
Shortstop
D'Andre Sanchez (Whittier/La Serna HS) singled home a run in the bottom of the fourth then scored on a brilliant slide at home following a wild pitch.
Myles Hager (Tarzana/Chaminade Prep) led off the fifth with his first home run of the season to cut the Chico lead to 6–3, but that was as close as the Otters would get.
THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Reliever Dan Beavers got
Myles Hager to fly to the wall in deep center field with two on, two outs and the Otters trailing 7–3 in the eighth.
DUER GETS PICKY… After clinching Friday's win with a walk–off double in the 15th inning, senior catcher
Hayden Duer showed off his arm Saturday. Not only did he throw out a runner attempting to steal, he picked runners off both second and third base with laser–like throws.
FEELING STRANDED… The Otters and Wildcats each left 12 runners on base in Saturday's game. The teams have combined to leave 53 runners on base through the first two games of the series.
AND THEN THERE WERE TWO… A 2–for–5 day by
Max Sanderson and a 1–for–3 day with a pair of walks by
TJ Dove left them as the last two Otters to have reached base safely every game this season.
Jacob Tonascia lost membership in that exclusive club by finishing Saturday's game 0–for–5.
HE'S STILL A HIT… A 3–for–5 day that included a pair of doubles helped
Kyle Czaplak extend his hitting streak to 10 games. It's the longest hitting streak by an Otter this season.
Jacob Tonascia hit safely in nine straight to start the season.
LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Kyle Czaplak (3x5, 2 2B, R);
Myles Hager (1x5, HR (1), R, RBI);
Max Sanderson (2x5)..
THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4–game set against Chico State with a doubleheader Sunday starting at noon.
GO OTTERS!
