ARCATA, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay continued its assault on the 3–point record book Saturday at Humboldt State, but another stellar effort from long range wasn't enough to overcome the host Lumberjacks in an 87–79 setback in Lumberjack Arena.
CSUMB shot a sizzling 52 percent (14-for-27) from beyond the arc. Six different Otters knocked down at least one trey, led by freshman
Josh Kollman (Bothell [Wash.] HS), who went 4-for-5 to increase his lead in the conference 3–point shooting race. But the Otters shot just 35 percent (13-for-37) on all other field goal attempts. That wasn't enough to overcome Humboldt's 12–point edge from the free-throw line (23–11).
Brian Garrett (St. Francis HS) and
Jahvon Johnson (Clovis North HS) led the Otters with 15 points apiece. Kollman added 14 points.
Anthony Booker (Weston Ranch HS) and
Jonquis Bouyea (Seaside HS) shared team–high honors with seven rebounds each.
THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Ashton Pomrehn knocked down one of two free throws with 25 seconds remaining to give Humboldt an 86–77 lead.
THE THIEF OF VICTORVILLE STRIKES AGAIN… Mateo Jones pulled to within two steals of the CSUMB record for steals in a career with two more thefts Saturday night at Humboldt State. Jones now has 106 thefts in his Otter career and needs two more to tie and three to pass the all–time record of 108 set by
Alex Fertig (2013–16).
THE NOT SO STEALTH BOMBERS… CSUMB continued its aerial assault on the record book by draining 11 more 3–pointers Saturday night in Arcata. That give the Otters 217 for the season, good for No. 3 on the school single–season list. They need seven more to tie the 2007–08 team for No. 2.
The Otters need to average just seven treys per game over the final four games to break the school record of 245 set by the 1999 squad. They're averaging 9.9 per game so far.
