SEASIDE, Calif. — The No. 21 ranked Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team kept its hot start rolling into Friday's conference opener as the Otters reached double–digit runs again in a 10–2 win over visiting Cal State San Bernardino at the Otter Sports Complex.
CSUMB improved to 7–0 overall, the second–best start in program history. San Bernardino dipped to 0–7. The game was the CCAA opener for both teams.
Gabe Katich (San Jose/Gavilan College) improved to 3–0 with his most impressive start of the young season. He fanned seven and allowed just one unearned run in six solid innings. Sophomore
Ethan McRae (Fresno CC) was even more impressive in his first Otter appearance, tossing three perfect innings of relief while fanning four to earn the save.
The Otters broke the game open with a 5–run second inning. An RBI double by
Ruben Gonzalez (Murietta Mesa HS) and a run scoring knock by
Myles Hager (Tarzana/Chaminade Prep) highlighted the outburst.
CSUMB added single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth before
Kyle Guerra's (San Leandro HS) RBI single capped the 2–run eighth that iced the game.
THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Ethan McRae took the mound to start the seventh inning. San Bernardino did not get another base runner for the balance of the game.
ROLLIN', ROLLIN' ROLLIN', RAWHIDE… Jacob Tonascia keeps rolling the rawhide to place fielders aren't. His second–inning single ran his hitting streak to eight games—including all seven games so far in 2018. He is the only Otter to hit safely in every game this season.
THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN… CSUMB's win streak hit seven games Friday, the second longest streak to open a season in CSUMB baseball history. The 2016 Otters started 9–0 en route to 34 wins and an NCAA Regional bid.
DOUBLE THE PLEASURE, DOUBLE THE FUN… The Otters score in double figures for the fifth time in their last six games by hanging a 10 spot on the Coyotes Friday. To add some perspective to that, the CSUMB record for most game with double–digit runs in a season is 12, by the 2015 and 2016 squads. The Otters have 43 regular season games remaining to chase that record.
LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Gabe Katich (W (3–0), 6.0 IP, 1 ER, 6 H, 7 K, 1 BB);
Ethan McRae (S (1), 3.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 4 K, 0 BB);
Kyle Guerra (3x4, 2B, SB, 2 R, 2 RBI);
Kyle Czaplak (3x5, 2B, R, RBI);
Jordan Esposo (2x4, 2 2B, 2 R, RBI);
TJ Dove (2x5, R, RBI).
THE LAST WORD… "We are playing well enough to win games, but we still have plenty of room to improve. We made three outs on the bases today, which isn't the way we want to give them away. But we have been patient and stubborn at the plate and we are making the other team's pitchers work. Gabe and Ethan threw really well for us. It was great to finally get an opportunity to use Ethan. He was electric and he will be a big part of our pitching staff as we move forward." —
CSUMB Head Coach Walt White
THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 4–game series with San Bernardino by hosting a doubleheader Saturday starting at 11 a.m.
