Wildcats Take Long–Range Shootout From Otters

Otters and Chico combine for 25 3–pointers in 94–77 Wildcat win

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay and Chico State both sizzled from long range, but the host Wildcats did a bit more work on the glass and in the paint to earn a 94–77 win Friday night in Acker Gym.

Freshman Josh Kollman (Bothell, Wash./Bothell HS), the CCAA's leading 3–point shooter, went 5-for-9 from beyond the arc for all 15 of his points. Led by Kollman, CSUMB shot 46 percent (11-of-24) from long range and a season–high 54 percent (29-of-54) from the floor overall.

For its part, Chico shot 45 percent from range (14-of-31) and out–rebound the Otters 40–25. That helped the Wildcats build a 41–30 halftime lead. CSUMB got to within single digits for the last time on a Mateo Jones (Victorville/Silverado HS) traditional 3–point play at 54–45. But the Wildcats gently eased away over the final six minutes to account for the 17–point final margin.

Brian Garrett (San Carlos/St. Francis HS) led the Otters with 16 points. Stephen Matthews (Sacramento HS) added 14 points and Gregg Polosky (San Ramon Valley HS) chipped in 11.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… a Justin Briggs layup made it 89–72 Chico with 2:39 left in the game.

LIKE A THIEF IN THE NIGHT… Mateo Jones continues to inch closer to Alex Fertig's CSUMB career steals record of 108. Jones had one steal Friday night, giving him 104 steals with five games remaining in the season.

THE NOT SO STEALTH BOMBERS…  CSUMB continued its aerial assault on the record book by draining 11 more 3–pointers Friday night in Chico. That give the Otters 206 for the season, passing the 2015–16 team (205) for No. 3 on the Otter single–season list. The Otters need to average eight treys per game over the final five games to break the school record of 245 set by the 1999 squad. They're averaging 9.8 per game so far.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Brian Garrett 16; REBOUNDS: Anthony Booker 5; ASSISTS: Brian Garrett 4; BLOCKS: Anthony Booker 1; STEALS: Gregg Polosky 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to the Northern California coast to face Humboldt State Saturday (Feb. 3). Tip-off will be at 7:30 p.m. as the nightcap of men's/women's doubleheader action.
