Second Half Cold Spell Sinks Otters In 76–64 Loss

Jahvon Johnson pours in 17, moves to No. 16 in CSUMB career scoring

ARCATA, Calif. — A solid first half by the Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team froze under a positively frigid shooting spell in the second half as the Otters fell at Humboldt State 76–64 Thursday night in Lumberjack Arena.

The teams traded leads through close first half that saw the Otters head into the lockerroom trailing just 37–34. But the final half was unkind to say the least to Otter shooters, who combined to miss their final 19 3–point attempts of the night, including all 17 they took in the second half. That allowed Humboldt to open the period with a 15–2 run.

CSUMB never got closer than 12 points the rest of the way.

Jahvon Johnson (Clovis North HS) led three Otters in double figures with 17 points. Joseph Bosetti (Red Bluff HS) added 16 points. Johnson and Bosetti shared team–high honors with six rebounds apiece.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Justin Everett grabbed an offensive board off a Kameron Curl miss for Humboldt with 1:11 remaining.

MOVIN' ON UP… With 17 points Thursday night, Jahvon Johnson moved past Derrick Anderson (2010–13) and into 16th place on the Otter career scoring list with 681 points.

START ME UP… By starting his ninth game of the season Thursday night, Jahvon Johnson took sole possession of the No. 8 spot on the Otter list for career starts with 55. If he starts every game this season, Johnson will move up to No. 4 on the list and will be within striking distance of Brandon Ward (2010–13), who owns the Otter record with 98 career starts.

ICE, ICE BABY… The Otters live and die with their ability to shoot the ball. Thursday night, it was the latter as they converted just 18 percent (6–for–33) from beyond the 3–point arc. It was CSUMB's coldest shooting night in just over a year. The Otters made 17 percent (4–for–24) at Cal State East Bay on Dec. 2, 2017.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jahvon Johnson 17; REBOUNDS: Joseph Bosetti/Jahvon Johnson 6; ASSISTS: Jahvon Johnson 3; BLOCKS: Kyle Johnson 2; STEALS: Joseph Bosetti/Kyle Johnson 1.

THE LAST WORD… "Tonight it came down to defensive rebounding and turnovers. We just need to get better in those areas. I have confidence that this group of guys will stick together and do the work necessary for that improvement." – CSUMB Head Coach Isaac Williams

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will take the weekend and all of next week off before hosting Cal State L.A. for a CCAA doubleheader on Sunday, Dec. 16. The women will tip-off at 1 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 3 p.m.
