Big Rebounding Day By Reynoso Not Enough Against CSUDH

Ashley Reynoso became first freshman to rebound in double figures since 2015 but Toros wins 70–48

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team led for much of the first quarter, but couldn't sustain that momentum as visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills came on to earn a 70–48 win Saturday afternoon in The Kelp Bed.

CSUMB got 12 points from Yolanda Ealy (Long Beach Poly/L.A. Valley College) and a team season–high 12 rebounds from freshman Ashley Reynoso (Orcutt/Righetti HS). Dominguez Hills, however, made eight more 3–pointers and eight more free throws than the Otters. Those two stats essentially told the story Saturday.

The Otters went cold after halftime, shooting just 20 percent from the floor. Dominguez Hills took advantage, using a 10–2 run late in the third quarter and early in the fourth to put the Otters in a 15–foot hole from which the Otters never recovered.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… A Destinee Williams layup gave the Toros a 65–45 lead with 2:54 remaining.

CHAIRWOMEN OF THE BOARDS… Freshman Ashley Reynoso became the first Otter to rebound in double figures this season by grabbing 12 boards Saturday versus Cal State Dominguez Hills. They are the most rebounds by an Otter freshman since Michelle Hale pulled down an Otter freshman record 16 rebounds against Cal Tech on Dec. 15, 2003. Reynoso is the first Otter freshman to rebound in double figures since Alexa Sperling pulled down 10 boards at Cal State San Bernardino on Jan. 15, 2015.

FREE THROWS ARE PRACTICALLY FREE… The Otters continue to make the most of their trips to the free–throw line this season, shooting a 73.3 percent (107–of–146) clip through seven games. If the season ended today, that would smash the school record of 70.6 percent set during the 2008–09 season.

…BUT 3–POINTERS ARE EXPENSIVE… Long range shooting has been tough sledding for the Otters as the season passes the quarter pole. CSUMB went 0–for–10 from beyond the arc Saturday and has missed the last 17 attempts from beyond the arc dating back to the Sonoma State game on Nov. 24.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Yolanda Ealy 12; REBOUNDS: Ashley Reynoso 12; ASSISTS: Chyna Dews/Alisson Dones 2; BLOCKS: Yolanda Ealy/Ashley Reynoso 1; STEALS: Siana Fields 3.

THE LAST WORD… ""We continue to get better in some areas. We had a better start than we've had thus far. We just need to string together more runs throughout the 40 minutes as we continue to trust the process." – CSUMB Head Coach CJ Pace

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head up the coast for a doubleheader at Humboldt State Thursday (Dec. 6) in as part of a CCAA doubleheader. The women will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
