No. 9 UC San Diego Breaks Open Close Game For 72–61 Win

Joseph Bosetti leads CSUMB with a season–high 22 points and seven rebounds

SEASIDE, Calif. — A quick run midway through the second half gave nationally–ranked UC San Diego enough separation to hold on for a 72–61 win over Cal State Monterey Bay Thursday night in The Kelp Bed.

The Otters got a season–high 22 points from junior Joseph Bosetti (Red Bluff HS) and out–rebounded the bigger Tritons 36–32 for the game. But an 11–0 Triton run midway through the second half turned a 2–point game into a 46–33 UCSD lead. UCSD kept its lead in the 10 to 15 point range for most of the balance of the game.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Jeremy Johnson grabbed the rebound of a missed Otter layup with UCSD leading 68–51 and 3:17 remaining in the second half.

REBOUNDING IS A TEAM GAME… With their top two post players on the shelf due to injury, the Otters are finding success on the glass thanks to contributions from a variety of players. Thursday night, the Otters compiled a 36–32 rebounding edge over UCSD thanks to seven different players pulling down at least three boards. Joseph Bosetti led the balanced effort with seven rebounds.

DEFENSE BOUNCES BACK… After allowing a season–high 97 points in its previous game at Sonoma State, the Otter defense bounced back to hold UC San Diego to a opponent season–low 72 points Thursday night.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Joseph Bosetti 22; REBOUNDS: Joseph Bosetti 7; ASSISTS: Jahvon Johnson 3; BLOCKS: Jared Williams 1; STEALS: Jared Williams 3.

THE LAST WORD… "We have as much respect for UC San Diego as any program in the conference. They are very talented and very well coached. That being said, I thought our very young group played toe–to–toe with them for much of the game. Unfortunately, we came up short. All we can do is stick together, continue to improve and our time will come." – CSUMB Head Coach Isaac Williams
THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their brief homestand by hosting Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday (Dec. 1) as part of a CCAA doubleheader. The women will tip-off at 1 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 3 p.m.
