One Free Kick The Difference As Unbeaten Streak Ends At L.A.

Golden Eagle free kick in the 78th minute gives Cal State L.A. a 1–0 win

LOS ANGELES — A late Golden Eagle free kick spoiled a solid performance by the Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team as Cal State L.A. hung on for a 1–0 victory Sunday afternoon at University Stadium.

Leslie Ramirez bent a free kick just inside the far post in the 78th minute for what proved to be the match's only marker. Despite putting seven shots on frame (compared to just five for L.A.) the Otter offense couldn't break through.

Cal State L.A. held an edge in possession through much of a scoreless first half, but the Otters ramped up the pressure after the restart. CSUMB put shots on target four times in the first half hour of the second half, but L.A. goalkeeper Adriana Maldonado denied all four.

Minus the perfectly placed free kick, Stephanie Busch (Santa Cruz HS) and the Otter defense was every bit as solid as the host and arguably deserved better than the final result.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Leslie Ramirez scored on a free kick for L.A. in the 78th minute. It was the last shot of the match for either team.

UNBEATEN RUN ENDS… Sunday's setback was the first loss for the Otters since Sept. 21, snapping a 4–match (3–0–1) unbeaten streak. The Otters have now posted unbeaten streaks of at least four matches in consecutive seasons for the first time since 2002–03. For those scoring at home, the Otters went 2–0–3 from Sept. 6–17, 2017.

ALMOST SPOTLESS… By allowing just a single goal Sunday, the Otter defense has allowed either one or no goals 10 times in the first 11 matches, the best such streak in school history. In fact, 1–plus season under Head Coach Laura VanWart, the Otter have allowed either no goals or one goal 21 times in 29 matches.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: None; ASSISTS: None; POINTS: None; SHOTS: Sierra Levy 3; SAVES: Stephanie Busch 4.

THE LAST WORD… "We are disappointed to not have gotten a result today. We created some tremendous chances and really fought during most the game. While I always want to win, our team showed some real heart and commitment to our program in their performance today and I was proud." – CSUMB Head Coach Laura VanWart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return home to begin a 4–game homestand starting Wednesday against Cal State East Bay. Kickoff will be at 3 p.m. as the finale of men's/women's doubleheader action.
