Brilliant Bojorquez Strike Lifts Otters Over East Bay, 1-0

Sahana Bojorquez scores 10 minutes from time, Stephanie Busch posts sixth shutout

SEASIDE, Calif. — A sizzling strike by junior Sahana Bojorquez (Las Vegas, Nev./Spring Valley HS) 10 minutes from time lifted the Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team to a 1–0 win over visiting Cal State East Bay Wednesday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

Bojorquez found the upper left vee from outside the box against the run of play. East Bay had been mounting pressure in the offensive third when the Otters countered off an Pioneer corner.

Allexxis Hand (Hacienda Heights/Los Altos HS) turned the play toward the Pioneer half. A short Meredith Kelly (Simi Valley HS) pass created a little space for Bojorquez, who curled a cracker just inside the post, giving a diving East Bay keeper no chance at the save.

Senior goalkeeper Stephanie Busch (Santa Cruz HS) made the goal stand up with another solid effort between the pipes. She made eight saves to complete her school–record tying sixth shutout of the season.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… the Otters cleared an East Bay corner in the 85th minute to thwart the final Pioneer scoring threat.

STONEWALL STEPHANIE… Senior goalkeeper Stephanie Busch added to what is becoming the best season by a goalkeeper in Otter history by posting her school–record sixth shutout of 2018 Wednesday against East Bay. Her six clean sheets are the most by an Otter in their NCAA era (2004–present) and tie Melissa Moen (2003) for the most in a season in school history.

STEPHANIE SAVES… With eight saves Wednesday, Stephanie Busch moved into a tie for the No. 10 spot on the CSUMB single–season saves list with 63. She matches the total posted by Alyssa Noh in 2017. In case you're wondering, the CSUMB season record for saves is 117 by Erika Ulfelder (2006).

ALMOST SPOTLESS… By posting another shutout, the Otter defense has allowed either one or no goals 11 times in the first 12 matches of 2018. It's the most stingy start by an Otter defense in program history.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Sahana Bojorquez 1; ASSISTS: Meredith Kelly 1; POINTS: Sahana Bojorquez 2; SHOTS: Sahana Bojorquez/Jasmine Safarians/Sophia Zertuche 2; SAVES: Stephanie Busch 8.

THE LAST WORD… "Overall it was another consistent performance today by the team. Our defense was organized, tough and handled pressure well, and we got a tremendous goal from one of our mids. We still need to get sharper in the final third, but, overall, it was a good day for the Otters." – CSUMB Head Coach Laura VanWart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will continue their 4–match homestand by hosting San Francisco State Friday (Oct. 12). Kickoff will be at 3 p.m. as the second match of men's/women's doubleheader action.
