Busch Sets Shutout Record As Otters Play To Scoreless Draw

Stephanie Busch records seventh clean sheet in 0–0 draw with S.F. State

SEASIDE, Calif. — Despite more than doubling San Francisco State's shot total, Cal State Monterey Bay couldn't find its way into the back of the net, spoiling a record–setting performance by senior goalkeeper Stephanie Busch (Santa Cruz HS) to settle for a tie against the visiting Gators Friday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

Busch set the CSUMB season record with her seventh shutout to earn a share of the spoils. The Otters are now 6–5–3 overall and 3–4–1 in the CCAA.

The Otters out–shot SFSU 20–8 for the match, forcing Gator goalkeeper Nicki Rucki to make a career–high 11 saves. In the end, CSUMB was forced to accept its second draw in as many weeks.

The Otters out–shot the Gators 7–0 through the first 45 minutes and 6–2 in the two overtime periods. They had several glorious chances to score, perhaps none better than  in the waning seconds of overtime when Madison Aguirre (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde HS) broke in on goal, hit the post, and watched the ball walk the goalline before Rucki cleared it from danger.

Freshman Maya Richardson (Sacramento/West Campus HS) also rang one off the post on the half hour.

SFSU came on after halftime, taking six of its eight shots and all five of its shots on goal in the second 45 minutes. Busch was equal to the task each time she was called to action, making all five saves.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Madison Aguirre's breakaway attempt hit the post and somehow stayed out in the final five seconds of overtime.

THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN… Senior goalkeeper Stephanie Busch posted her seventh shutout of 2018 to set the CSUMB record for shutouts in one season. She had entered Friday's action tied with Melissa Moen (2003) for the top spot at six.

IN–FORM OTTERS… Although wishing for more out of Friday's dominating effort, the Otters remain in top form as the enter the final fortnight of the regular season. CSUMB is 4–1–2 in its last seven matches dating back to Sept. 23. It's their best run of play since joining the NCAA in 2004 and their best since going 7–1–0 from Oct. 4–29, 2003.

ALMOST SPOTLESS… By posting their seventh shutout Friday afternoon, the Otter defense has allowed either one or no goals 12 times in the first 13 matches. Such a run of defensive excellence is unparalleled in Otter history.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: None; ASSISTS: None; POINTS: None; SHOTS: Sierra Levy 4; SAVES: Stephanie Busch 5.

THE LAST WORD… "We deserved much more than a point out of the match, but after four games in eight days we just lacked the ability to put the ball away today. Overall, we we're gritty and dangerous. I was so proud of the effort we put in. Our program is clearly moving forward rapidly." – CSUMB Head Coach Laura VanWart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 4–match homestand next Friday (Oct. 19) when Cal Poly Pomona visits the Otter Sports Complex. Kickoff will be at 3 p.m. as the second match of men's/women's doubleheader action.
