Otters Earn A Wild 2–2 Tie With Pomona To Keep Postseason Hopes Afloat

Stephanie Busch makes 11 saves; Maya Richardson and Annie Brown score goals

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay found a way to get a result against unusual odds by earning a 2–2 draw with visiting Cal Poly Pomona Friday at the Otter Sport Complex.

Despite being out–shot 21–5, the Otters (6–5–3, 3–4–2 CCAA) picked up a point to move into a tie with Stanislaus State for seventh place in the CCAA standings with three matches remaining. Cal Poly Pomona (4–8–3, 0–6–3) now must win its three remaining matches and get a ton of help if it hopes to play into November. The top six teams in the final standings will advance to the CCAA Championship Tournament.

Senior goalkeeper Stephanie Busch (Santa Cruz HS) almost single–handedly kept the Otters in this one early. She made seven saves in the first half and stopped 11 in the match.

After being out–shot 11–0 over the first 42 minutes, the Otters struck first against the run of play when Maya Richardson (Sacramento/West Campus HS) banged home a Norma Verduzco (Gonzales HS/Hartnell College) cross in the 43rd minute. After Pomona scored to tie early in the second half, Annie Brown (Contra Costa Christina HS) bundled in a Jasmine Safarians (Pleasant Hill/College Park HS) cross on the doorstep in the 66th minute.

But Pomona answered 2:05 later to square the match and neither team could budge the scoreline over the final 43 minutes.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Pomona's Ambria Pogue shot over the crossbar in the ninth minute of the first overtime. It proved to be the final shot of the match for either team.

BUSCH REWRITES THE BOOK AGAIN… Senior goalkeeper Stephanie Busch made 11 saves Friday, the third most in a match in Otter history. It was a career high for Busch and marked the fourth time this season she has posted nine or more saves in a match, something no other Otter has ever done.

SHUTOUT STREAK ENDS… Pomona's goal in the 48th minute ended a run of 260:36 scoreless minutes for Stephanie Busch in goal over the last four matches.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… The goals by Maya Richardson and Annie Brown were both the first of their collegiate careers. They join Sierra Levy, Jasmine Safarians and Brooke Tafoya as freshman who have scored for the Otters in 2018.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Annie Brown/Maya Richardson 1; ASSISTS: Jasmine Safarians/Norma Verduzco 1; POINTS: Annie Brown/Maya Richardson 2; SHOTS: Annie Brown 2; SAVES: Stephanie Busch 11.

THE LAST WORD… "It was a really tough game today. Pomona definitely outworked us at times and made it difficult for us to find a rhythm. On the positive side, we scored two tremendous goals and got a point out of the day. We are already looking to Sunday for our next challenge." – CSUMB Head Coach Laura VanWart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters close the home portion of their 2018 schedule by hosting Cal State San Bernardino Sunday morning. Kickoff will be at 2 p.m. as the second game of men's/women's doubleheader action.
