Late Penalty Costly In 1–0 Setback To San Bernardino

86th minute penalty gives Coyotes three important points in CCAA race

SEASIDE, Calif. — An 86th minute penalty kicked proved to be the difference as Cal State San Bernardino hogged the spoils in a 1–0 win over Cal State Monterey Bay Sunday at the Otter Sports Complex.

The win puts San Bernardino (5–10–0, 4–6–0 CCAA) one point ahead of CSUMB (6–6–3, 3–5–2 CCAA) as they both chase Cal State L.A. for the final CCAA Tournament bid. All three teams have two matches remaining next week.

There wasn't much offense to be found Sunday. Including the San Bernardino spot kick, the teams combined for just nine shots. The Otters ended with a 6–3 advantage.

The match turned just after the clock struck 85 minutes when Otter goalkeeper Stephanie Busch (Santa Cruz HS) clipped a Coyote challenging for the ball in the box. Haidee Duran finished from the spot for the match's lone goal.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Haidee Duren converted a penalty in the 86th minute. It was the final shot for either team.

ALMOST NO SHOT… The three shots allowed by the Otter defense Sunday were the second fewest allowed this season and the fewest since CSUMB held Minnesota–Crookston to a single shot in a 1–0 Otter win on Sept. 1.

STEPHANIE SAVES… With two saves Sunday, Stephanie Busch became just the eighth player in Otter history to record 80–plus saves in a single season (81). Busch's current save percentage of .878 is the best ever by an Otter for a single season.

NOT SO MELLOW YELLOW… Sophomore Monica Hrncir (Archbishop Mitty HS) picked up a yellow card in the 90th minute Sunday. It was just the fourth yellow card issued to an Otter in 2018.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: None; ASSISTS: None; POINTS: None; SHOTS: Maya Richardson 4; SAVES: Stephanie Busch 2.

THE LAST WORD… "It was tough to lose at home on a penalty kick. We definitely didn't deserve that result. That being said, we have to do a better job of putting the game away and finishing our chances. We plan on finishing the season on the road with fight and fury. These players will use today's disappointment to fuel future wins." – CSUMB Head Coach Laura VanWart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters hit the road for the final two regular season games next weekend when they travel to face Humboldt State Thursday (Oct. 25) and Sonoma State Saturday (Oct. 27). Kickoff will be 12:30 p.m. at Humboldt and 11:30 a.m. at Sonoma
