Otters Throw Kitchen Sink At Humboldt But It’s Not Enough

CSUMB’s playoff hopes end with 2–0 setback in Arcata

ARCATA, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay threw everything in its arsenal at Humboldt State Thursday afternoon, but it wasn't enough to get the point the Otters desperately needed in a 2–0 loss at College Creek Field.

The loss officially ends CSUMB's (6–7–3, 3–6–2 CCAA) postseason hopes. The Otters can still finish amongst the top six teams in the CCAA, but would lose out on a tournament bid in the tiebreaker scenarios.

The Otters took 19 shots—their second most this season and ninth most all time—but couldn't find a way past Humboldt goalkeeper Brooke Townsend, who made five saves. Stephanie Busch (Santa Cruz HS) made seven saves for the Otters.

Humboldt scored the only goal it would need on an 11th minute free kick by Sabine Postma. The Lumberjacks added a dagger against the run of play on an odd–man counter that Busch challenged but couldn't break up just past the hour mark.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Brooke Townsend denied an attempt from Madison Aguirre in the 87th minute. Although Sophia Zertuche sent one over the crossbar 30 seconds later, Aguirre's was the last shot the Otters would put on frame.

STILL SOME CHICKEN LEFT ON THE BONE… Although postseason play no longer is on the table, the Otters still have things to accomplish in Saturday's season finale. A win at Sonoma would be No. 7 on the season, matching the Otters' second most ever at the NCAA level. Additionally, with a win Saturday the Otters would finish with 24 points overall, which would equal the 2012 team for the most at the NCAA level.

BUSCH CLOSES IN ON SEVENTH PLACE… With seven saves Thursday afternoon, Stephanie Busch pushed her season total to 88. She will enter Saturday's finale one save behind Andrea Schuitema (2001) for No. 7 on the Otter single–season list. She needs five saves to catch Grace Holguin (2010) for No. 6 and eight to tie Andrea Davis (2009) for No. 5.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: None; ASSISTS: None; POINTS: None; SHOTS: Jasmine Safarians/Sophia Zertuche 5; SAVES: Stephanie Busch 7.

THE LAST WORD… "After giving up an early goal on a set piece we had to chase the game today. While we had tons of shots and opportunities, we didn't capitalize on them." – CSUMB Head Coach Laura VanWart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters close their 2018 campaign with a match at Sonoma State Saturday (Oct. 27) at 11:30 a.m.
