Comeback For The Ages Extends Winning Streak To Five

Otters rally from 0–2 down for the second time in four matches to stun Chico

CHICO, Calif. — All but left for dead after scoring just 22 total points in the first two sets, the Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team found a way back from the brink once again to rally for a 7–25, 15–25, 25–22, 25–23, 16–14 win over Chico State Friday night in Acker Gym.

Senior libero Ashlynne Armstrong (Norco HS) served a school–record seven aces to lead the Otters to their fifth consecutive win. The win also keeps CSUMB (11–6, 6–4 CCAA) tied for the lead in the CCAA North Division.

That the match went five really came as no surprise. The Otters and Wildcats have gone the distance in 12 of their last 22 matches. In fact, it marked the third time in the last four seasons that one of these teams rallied from 0–2 down to win the match.

What set this match apart was the depths from which the Otters rose to reach the summit. The seven points scored in the first set were the fewest by the Otters in the rally scoring era of college volleyball (2001). When they fell behind 13–4 to start the second set, the match appeared to be over.

But Head Coach Moe Melhart waved her magic wand over the team during the break. The spell she cast helped the Otters score five of the final six points in the third set to force a fourth. An Erica Chapa/Chandler McKean block and a Baylie Pierson kill broke a 23–23 tie in the fourth set to set up the winner–take–all fifth.

Finally, trailing 13–12 in the fifth, the Otters scored four of the final five points, including a block by McKean and Anela Visesio on match point to seal the improbable win.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Chandler McKean and Anela Visesio blocked Kennedy Rice for match point.

COMEBACK KIDS… The Otters came from 0–2 down to win for the second time in their last four matches. It marked just the seventh time in school history the Otters have come from 0–2 down to win and the first time they've done it twice in one season.

SHE'S ACES… Already when of the top servers in Otter history, Ashlynne Armstrong emphasized that point by serving a school–record seven aces Friday in Chico. She broke the record of six set five times previously, last by Erica Chapa versus Metro State on Sept. 2, 2017.

MORE ARMSTRONG… With seven aces Friday, Ashlynne Armstrong now has 109 for her career. That mark is No. 4 in the Otter record book.

A MILESTONE FOR CHAPA… With 46 assists Friday in Chico, Erica Chapa went over 1,500 (1,507) career assists. That is No. 5 in the Otter career record book.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… KILLS: Anela Visesio 16; BLOCKS: Samantha Brennan/Chandler McKean/Anela Visesio 3; ACES: Ashlynne Armstrong 7; ASSISTS: Erica Chapa 46; DIGS: Ashlynne Armstrong 20.

THE LAST WORD… "Oh wow what a WIN! All week we have been talking about the last five percent that it's going to take to be great and, tonight, we found it. Chico State is a great program and they brought it. When we decided to push back ,things began to happen for us.  I am so proud of this team and its willingness to find their five percent tonight." — CSUMB Head Coach Moe Melhart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their annual Highway 99 experience with a match at Stanislaus State Saturday (Oct. 6). First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
