SEASIDE, Calif. — No. 24 Cal Poly Pomona got off to a sizzling start, caught fire from long range, and rolled to an 86–60 win over Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday night in The Kelp Bed.
Cal Poly came into the game as one of the weaker 3–point shooting teams in the CCAA but lit the scoreboard from long range Saturday night, making 12-of-22 (55 percent) from beyond the arc, more than 200 points above its season average.
CSUMB stayed close for the first six minutes before Pomona went on a 30–9 run to take the game by the scruff of the neck. The Otters pulled to within 13 points midway through the second half—and had opportunities to draw even closer—before an 15–4 game–ending Bronco run accounted for the final margin
Brian Garrett (San Carlos/St. Francis HS) and
Mateo Jones (Victorville/Silverado HS) led the Otter offense with 17 points apiece. Jones added game highs of seven rebounds and three steals.
THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Riley Schaefer grabbed the rebound of a missed
Koen Sapwell jumper with 3:42 remaining and Cal Poly leading 76–56.
A SIX PACK FROM THE RECORD… With three steals Saturday night,
Mateo Jones moved to within six of breaking the school record of 108 set by
Alex Fertig (2013–16). Jones, who averages 1.9 steals per game, has six games left to break the record.
MORE FROM THE THIEF OF VICTORVILLE… Mateo Jones finished the night with 39 steals from the season, good for No. 11 on the Otter single season list. He needs one more to catch Jay DeMaestri (40 in 2005–06) for the No. 10 spot.
ON THE BLOCKS… With two more blocks Saturday night,
Gregg Polosky now has 26 so far in his junior season. That ties
Kris Gallop for No. 7 on the Otter single–season list. Billy Curry owns the CSUMB record of 40 set in 2000–01. Polosky already owns the CSUMB career record of 86.
