SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- The Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team was put on its heals early in Friday's game against Cal State San Bernardino as the Coyotes scored twice in the first half to hand the Otters a 2-0 loss at Premier Field.
CSUMB surrendered their first goal of the game 16:38 into the first half on a cross that found its way past the goalie and defenders to the foot of Rachel Figg for her fourth goal of the season. A little over eight minutes later, a high cross into the box found the foot of Nicki Argentieri for her first goal of the season giving the hosts a 2-0 lead with 20 minutes remaining in the half.
Despite trailing 2-0 for the remainder of the game, the Otters switched on the offense out-shooting CSUSB 7-2 in the second half, effectively shutting out the Coyotes in a comeback effort. The Otters out-shot the Coyotes, 11-7, including two from
Sahana Bojorquez (Spring Valley HS), Dio Ruiz (Oakland Technical HS) and
Norma Verduzco (Gonzales HS), but were unable to tickle the twine in the loss.
THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN... Bojorquez's shot in the 85th minute went wide. While the shot led to a corner kick, no offense followed the set piece.
TARGET PRACTICE... After allowing its second goal, Cal State Monterey Bay out shot San Bernardino 9-2 in the final 66 minutes.
UNFAMILIAR FEELING... Friday's loss marks the first time the Otters have been defeated since losing 2-0 to Westmont College on September 2. Since the Westmont game, CSUMB has seen two victories and three draws.
UNFAMILIAR FEELING PART II... This is the first game where the Otters have not gone into overtime since a 6-0 win against Holy Names. Going more in depth, CSUMB played four consecutive overtime games and over 330 minutes played since their last game decided in regulation.
LEADERS OF THE RAFT... SHOTS: Bojorquez, Ruiz, Verduzco -- 2;
SHOTS ON GOAL: Taylor Duplantier (Lakewood HS), Madison Aguirre (Palo Verde HS) -- 1;
SAVES: Alyssa Noh -- 3.
THE FINAL WORD... "It was the second time this season we came out a bit sluggish and you can't do that against good teams. They put in two early goals and we spent the rest of the game playing catch up. It was uncharacteristic and we need to come out ready to play on Sunday."
Head Coach Laura VanWart.
THEY'VE GOT NEXT... Monterey Bay will battle the Broncos of Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday, September 24 in Kellogg Field. Kick off is set for 11:30 a.m.
GO OTTERS!
