Late Goal Sinks Otters In 1-0 Setback

Otters out-shoot HSU 13-8 but 87th minute tally spoils effort

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team is still looking for its first CCAA point following a tough–luck 1–0 loss to Humboldt State Sunday at the Otter Sports Complex. Humboldt scored the match winner in the 87th minute on just its second shot on goal of the match.

For their part, the Otters put seven shots on frame, asking multiple questions of Humboldt goalkeeper Chris Cherms, whom made several key stops to keep the match scoreless until Tyler Crandell found Isaiah Dairo unmarked in the upper left corner of the penalty area for with time winding down.

CSUMB had perhaps its most golden chance to grab the lead when Jacob Penner nodded a free kick that forced Cherms to tip over the crossbar in the 80th minute. Penner got his head on the resulting corner only to be denied by Cherms again, this time after rattling the crossbar. Luis Lopez pounced on the rebound but couldn't beat the Humboldt keeper either.

The Otters had one final shot in the 88th minute, but Makenna Pendleton's speculative effort from distance sailed over the crossbar.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… the Otters earned a late corner with 14 seconds left but couldn't take it before the clock showed all zeroes.

THEY'VE GOT A SHOT… Although it has not found the back of the net, CSUMB has out–shot its first two CCAA opponents an aggregate 27–16.

ASKING THE KEEPER SOME QUESTIONS… The Otters continue to do a solid job of testing opposing goal keepers. After forcing Humboldt keeper Chris Cherms to make seven saves Sunday, the Otters have put more than half (37) of their 68 shots on target through six matches this season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: none; ASSISTS: none; SHOTS: Luis Lopez/Emmanuel Montion/Makenna Pendleton 3; SAVES: Jesus Ochoa 1.

THE LAST WORD… "It's hard to take losing that game. I felt we did everything to score. We created over a dozen shooting opportunities so we have to build on the positives from that." – CSUMB Head Coach Shane Carew

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters begin a 4–match roadtrip with a visit to Southern California to face Cal State San Bernardino Friday (Sept. 22). Kickoff will be at 3 p.m. as the nightcap of men's/women's doubleheader action.
