SEASIDE, Calif. — In a decision as stunning as it was significant, upstart Cal State Monterey Bay shocked No. 10 ranked Sonoma State on
Haley Nishimoto's golden goal eight minutes into extra time
Friday at the Otter Sports Complex. The match was the CCAA opener for both teams and the first blemish on Sonoma (5–1–0) previously spotless record.
Friday's victory was an early signature win for rookie Head Coach
Laura VanWart, who has the Otters (3–1–2) one result away from the best start in program history.
To their credit, the Seawolves controlled much of the run of play, out–shooting CSUMB 13–7 before Nishimoto's match–winner. But to their credit, the Otters refused to simply pack the box, relying on sophomore goalkeeper
Alyssa Noh (9 saves) to frustratate the Sonoma strikeforce while her offense build its own attack.
Sonoma got its 13th shot of the day less than a minute into overtime and earned a corner
four minutes later. The teams traded possession before Hayden Gabbert gathered the ball at midfield and sent it to
Taylor Duplantier in the Sonoma penalty area.
Duplantier fed
Sahana Bojorquez for the shot, which Seawolf goalkeeper Kristen Spear was able to parry. But Nishimoto beat the rest of the Sonoma defense to the rebounded and knock it into a wide open goal.
