SEASIDE, Calif. — It was a welcome to the CCAA moment for the young Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team out–shot but couldn't out–score visiting Sonoma State, dropping a 2–0 decision Friday at the Otter Sports Complex. The Otters put nearly as many shots on goal (7) as Sonoma had total shots (8), but failed to find the back of the net for the second consecutive outing.
The most notable statistic from the match game from the referee's book. He issued eight total cards—including two yellows to CSUMB senior
Darren Sinclair and a straight red to Seawolf junior Tanner Allison—in addition to whistling 29 common fouls.
Sonoma scored the only goal it would need in the 27th minute when a quick build up led to Kyle Owings finding the side net from the top of the box. Despite playing down a man for most of the second half, the Otters controlled the run of play and nearly equalized when
Luis Lopez rattled the crossbar of a wide open goal in the 62nd minute.
Seven minute after Lopez's effort, freshman goalkeeper
Jesus Ochoa raced out to smother a through ball in the Otter box but was adjudged to have fouled a Sonoma attacker in the process. Eric Alvarado made good on the resulting spot kick to seal the game.
THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Eric Alvarado converted from the penalty spot to make it 2–0 Sonoma in the 69th minute.
THEY'VE GOT A SHOT… Not only did CSUMB out–shoot Sonoma 14–8 for the match, the Otters out–shot the Seawolves 6–3 in the 32 minutes they played down a man in the second half.
ASKING THE KEEPER SOME QUESTIONS… Although they failed to find the back of the net, the Otters continue to do a solid job of testing opposing goal keepers. After forcing Sonoma keeper Mitch North to make seven saves Friday, the Otters have put more than half (30) of their 55 shots on target through five matches this season.
LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: none; ASSISTS: none; SHOTS:
Makenna Pendleton 3; SAVES:
Jesus Ochoa 2.
THE LAST WORD… "A tough loss at home but we showed great character after going a man down. They were well coached and I thought we broke them down a times. We will build on those positives." –
CSUMB Head Coach Shane Carew
THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will close their brief 2–match homestand by hosting Humboldt State Sunday for an 11:30 a.m. kickoff. It will be the opener of men's/women's doubleheader action.
GO OTTERS!
