Otters Drop CCAA Tournament Opener to Broncos

Hager, Kriz collect RBI

STOCKTON, Calif. -- The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team couldn't find the timely hit to break open a big inning despite many chances at the crooked number in its first game of the 2017 CCAA Baseball Championship Tournament at Banner Island Ballpark, eventually falling to Cal Poly Pomona 6-3.

CSUMB and Cal Poly Pomona found its first runs without the benefit of a hit to tie the score at 1-1 after two innings. The Broncos opened things up with a 3-run third inning to lead 4-1. Pomona kept the 3-run lead through the middle innings as the Otters didn't score against till the eighth inning. By that time, Pomona had tacked on two runs in the seventh inning to extend the lead to 6-1. The Otters scored twice in the eighth inning but the rally was cut short leading to a 6-3 loss for CSUMB.

LEADING OFF... Ryan Arambula got the start and pitched six and one-thind innings allowing six runs in nine hits. He was tagged with his fifth loss of the season (5-5).

ON DECK... Myles Hager collected his team-leading 18th double of the season. He also knocked in a run in the loss.

IN THE HOLE... The relief pitchers in A.J. Banuelos and Steven Zaharias combined for 1.2 innings of 2-hit, shutout baseball.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT... Monterey Bay will play in the first elimination game on Thursday morning against Cal State L.A. First pitch is set for 11:00 a.m.

GO OTTERS!
