TURLOCK, Calif. -- In luckily the biggest game of the season so far, the Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team battled Stanislaus State in the series finalé of the 4-game road series. The Warriors jumped on Otter pitching early, plating five runs in the first innings. The 5-run hole was one that CSUMB could not dig out of en route to an 8-6 win.
After the Warriors big inning, CSUMB found the run column in the third inning on an RBI single by
Myles Hager, bringing the score to 6-1 Stanislaus. The Warriors scored a run in the fourth and the seventh inning to grow their lead to 8-1 heading into the final two innings of the game.Â
After a quiet eighth inning from both teams, the Otters made the top of the ninth entertaining by scoring five runs to bring the score to 8-6. With the go-ahead run at the plate and runners at the corners, the Warriors were able to shut the door on the Otter hopes of a comeback and send CSUMB home with the loss.
Â
LEADING OFF... With seven RBI this weekend, Hager moves into second place in the CCAA with 42. He is one behind Chico State's Cameron Santos
ON DECK... This marks the first time since 2012 that CSUMB has lost a series to Stanislaus State. The Warriors swept the Otters in 2012 in a home and home series.
IN THE HOLE... Despite the loss, the Otters magic number moved to one. CSUMB will need a win against Chico State next weekend or a Cal State East Bay loss against Stanislaus State to clinch a CCAA Tournament berth.
THE LAST WORD... "The first inning was out downfall. We made some defensive errors, both physically and mentally, which opened the door to a big inning. Offensively we weren't able to get things going until late but the hole we dug for ourselves was just a little too big to climb out of."
-Head Coach Walt White
THEY'VE GOT NEXT... Monterey Bay will go into the final series of the season needing to win one game against Chico State. The 4-game series will begin on Thursday, May 4th. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
