SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — The No. 25 Cal State Monterey Bay softball team got a pair of big performances from freshman pitcher
Hayley Fein (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) and senior first baseman
Madison Casto (Sunnyvale/Homestead HS) to sweep a doubleheader from Cal State San Bernardino, 3–0 and 1–0, Saturday at Coyote Park.
Fein threw her second and third collegiate shutouts to win both ends of the doubleheader. It's the second time in her young collegiate career that she has earned two wins on the same day.
Casto, meanwhile, capped a strong weekend by homering in consecutive at bats during the opener. They were her first two homers of the season and the 14th and 15th of her career, moving her into a tie for fifth place on the all–time Otter list.
Sam Luna's (Salinas HS/MPC) RBI single in the second inning of the opener provided Fein all the support she would need. Casto homered leading off the third and again with two outs in the fifth to account for the final margin.
The nightcap remained scoreless until the fifth inning when senior
Valerie Aguilar (Montebello/ELAC) delivered a clutch, 2–out, pinch–hit double.
Julia Garcia (Ventura College) then greeted relief pitcher Cassandra Williams with an RBI single to cash in the game's only marker.
GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Madison Casto hit her second homer of the game in the fifth inning to make it 3–0 Otters.
Haley Fein retired 12 of the final 13 Coyotes to seal the win.
GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Hayley Fein struck out Jessica Brown to lead off the seventh. The batters that followed were a combined 1-for-15 against Fein on the afternoon.
LEADING OFF… Madison Casto became the 13th Otter to hit two home runs in a game when she turned the trick in the opener. Teammate
Julia Garcia also hit two in a game in a Feb. 11 win over Sonoma State.
ON DECK… Saturday's wins mark the first time the Otters swept both ends of a doubleheader via shutout since they blanked San Francisco State 8–0 and 1–0 on Mar. 29, 2014. They were the first consecutive shutouts by the Otters since they beat Northwest Nazarene (9–0) and Holy Names (4–0) on Mar. 27, 2015.
IN THE HOLE… Hayley Fein's two shutouts Saturday marked just the second time an Otter has accomplished that feat and the first since (then) freshman
Cori Reinhart did it to beat Cal State Dominguez Hills (2–0) and Chico State (4–0) at the CCAA Tournament on Apr. 28, 2012.
LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Hayley Fein (2–0, 14.0 IP, 0 R, 9 H, 8 K);
Madison Casto (3x6, 2 HR (2), 2 R, 2 RBI).
THE LAST WORD… "On a must win day,
Hayley Fein stepped up and showed great maturity on the rubber. The bench was great and
Valerie Aguilar's pinch–hit double was clutch." –
CSUMB Head Coach Andrea Kenney
THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will take a break from conference play by hosting Pac West Conference rival Holy Names University for a single game Thursday (Mar. 9) at 3 p.m. at the Otter Sports Complex.
GO OTTERS!
