GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
SEASIDE, Calif. — The No. 18 ranked Cal State Monterey bay softball team kept rolling Sunday afternoon, adding a pair of shutouts to its résumé as it completed a 4–game sweep of Cal State San Marcos with 8–0 and 4–0 wins at the Otter Sports Complex.
CSUMB (23–4, 17–3 CCAA) ran its winning streak to 12 games with two more gems by freshman
Hayley Fein (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) and sophomore
Rosalia Keirns (Claremont HS). Fein (12–3) threw four innings of 2–hit ball in the opener before senior
Alyssa D'Agostino (Chino Hills/Ayala HS) finished with a perfect final inning.
Keirns (5–0) tossed six innings of 5–hit, shutout ball before Fein came on to strike out the side on 12 pitches to complete the sweep.
The Otter power game came to play once again in the opener, with 3–run homers by
Courtney Hennings (Amador Valley HS) and
Jenae Coleman (Castaic/Hart HS) powering the attack. CSUMB manufactured all four runs in the nightcap, with
Julia Garcia's (Ventura College) 2–out, RBI single in the third inning providing the winning run.
GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Courtney Hennings delivered her third home run of the season, a 3–run shot, in the second inning. San Marcos entered the game averaging less than three runs per game.
GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Sam Luna (Salinas HS/MPC) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 3–0 Otters in the sixth.
LEADING OFF… The 8–0 win in Game 2 was the 10th run–rule win of the season for CSUMB. The Otters had only seven such wins in all of 2016. FYI, the CSUMB record for run–rule wins in a season is 15 set in 2015.
ON DECK… Hayley Fein ran her scoreless innings streak to 28 1/3 by throwing five innings of 2–hit, shutout ball Sunday.
