SEASIDE, Calif. — After spotting visiting Stanislaus State an 8–point lead to open the game, the Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team came on strong to upend the Warriors 66–56 Friday night in The Kelp Bed.
Freshman guard
Kevin Warren (Oakland/St. Mary's HS) posted his team–leading third 20–point game of the season, leading all scorers with 20 points. The Otters also got 12 points from junior guard
Jonquis Bouyea (Seaside HS) and 10 from sophomore forward
Matt Bejsovec (Shingle Springs/Ponderosa HS).
It took CSUMB 10 minutes to catch Stanislaus at 16–16 on a Bouyea 3–pointer. A
Joe Covarrubias (Montebello/Cantwell–Sacred Heart) trey four minutes later gave the Otters the lead for the duration at 25–22. Stanislaus got within one point at 50–49 midway through the second half, but the Otters responded with an 11–2 run and never looked back.
THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Jahvon Johnson grabbed a rebound off his own missed layup with 46 seconds left, allowing the Otters to run the clock down to a
Julien Ducree layup with 14 second remaining that accounted for the final score.
ZERO THE HERO… In a Kelp Bed first, Stanislaus State did not shoot a free throw in Friday's game. Not that the stats were skewed much, however, as the Otters shot just six themselves. In fact, the entire game featured just 16 total fouls. Neither team reached the bonus in either half.
LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS:
Kevin Warren 20; REBOUNDS:
Kevin Warren 6; ASSISTS:
Jahvon Johnson 4; BLOCKS:
Julien Ducree 1; STEALS:
Jonquis Bouyea 3.
NOT SENIOR NIGHT… Although Saturday night will be the final game of the 2016–17 season for CSUMB, it will not be a traditional senior night. All of the Otter seniors (
Jack Biebel,
Mateo Jones and
Evan Zeller) are medically redshirting this season.
THE LAST WORD… "I thought we did a great job tonight. We weathered a little storm after getting the 10–point halftime lead and Kevin (Warren), J (Bouyea) and Matt (Bejsovec) hit some big shots for us down the stretch. It was really nice to see our growth and maturation take shape tonight and I was really proud of our effort." – CSUMB
Head Coach Rob Bishop
THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 2017 season by hosting Chico State Saturday in The Kelp Bed. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and the nightcap of men's/women's doubleheader action.
GO OTTERS!
