SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay softball team earned a big series win over Sonoma State by splitting a pair of run–rule games with the Seawolves Sunday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex. CSUMB took the opener 8–0 behind a 2–hit shutout by
Hayley Fein (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) before Sonoma avoided the sweep with an 11–3 win in the nightcap.
Both games went five innings. The Otters won the 4–game set three games to one.
Anneliese Lopez (Ventura/Buena HS) hit a bases–clearing double to cap a 5–run Otter first in Game 1. An RBI double by
Lusi Stanley (San Bruno/Howard College) and a 2–out, run–scoring knock by Lopez highlighted a 3–run fourth that set up the Otter win.
Fein was in control in the circle, allowing just an infield single in the second and a 2–out double in the fourth to post her first collegiate shutout.
Sonoma turned the tables in Game 2, using four singles, a walk and a bases–loaded double to produce a 5–run first inning of its own.
Julia Garcia's (Ventura College) third homer of the series got CSUMB back to within 6–3 in the third inning before the Seawolves put the game away with a 5–run fifth.
GAME ONE WAS OVER WHEN… Anneliese Lopez laced a bases loaded double to the gap in left center to cap the 5–run Otter first.
GAME TWO WAS OVER WHEN… Karly Macadangdang beat the throw home to score on an Alex Flores sac fly, making it 11–3 Sonoma in the fifth.
LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Julia Garcia 3x5, 2B, HR (3), run, 2 RBI;
Anneliese Lopez 2x4, 2B, 4 RBIs;
Courtney Hennings 3x6, 2B, SB, 4 runs; PITCHING:
Hayley Fein (Game 1) 5.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 K, 2 BB.
LEADING OFF… Hayley Fein became the fastest Otter true freshman to record her first collegiate shutout, doing so in her fourth career start Sunday vs. Sonoma State. For the record, Kylie Linane shutout Grand Canyon 5–0 in her first start as a redshirt freshman on Feb. 4, 2011.
ON DECK… The Otters began to find their power strokes against Sonoma State. After totalling just four extra base hits (all doubles) in their first five games of the season, the Otters added eight more in the four games versus Sonoma, including their first three homers of 2017.
IN THE HOLE… The Otter defense has been nothing short of stellar in the early going. CSUMB made a rare error in Game 1 Sunday, just its fifth error in nine games to start the season. The Otters sport an impressive .978 fielding percentage
THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters hit the road four a 4–game set at Stanislaus State Friday and Saturday (Feb. 17–18).
GO OTTERS!
