SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay softball team continued the strong start to its 2017 season by sweeping 2017 NCAA Regional participant Sonoma State 4–1 and 11–3 (5 innings) Saturday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.
CSUMB (6–1, 2–0 CCAA) got another gem of a performance from freshman pitcher
Hayley Fein (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS), who fanned five and allowed just one earned run in her second consecutive complete game. The Otter offense provided her all the support she would need by plating four runs in the first three innings.
Senior
Alyssa D'Agostino (Chino Hills/Ayala HS) earned her third win of the season in the nightcap. She came out after allowing a 2–run homer in the fourth inning, but the Otters were leading 11–0 by that point.
GAME ONE WAS OVER WHEN… The Seawolves made five errors in the first three inning, leading to all four Otter runs.
GAME TWO WAS OVER WHEN… Three consecutive walks on just 13 pitches helped the Otters put a seven spot up in the third inning to increase their lead to 11–0.
SEVEN COME 11… The 7–run third inning helped the Otters score 11 runs in a game for the third time in their first seven games. All three of those efforts resulted in run–rule victories (including 11–1 wins over New Mexico Highlands and the Univ. of Mary at the Desert Stinger Classic).
POWER SURGE… Junior third baseman
Julia Garcia (Ventura College) ripped home runs in consecutive at bats in the first and third innings of Game 2. Not only were they her first Otter home runs, they were the first home runs of the season by any Otter.
RECORD–TYING EFFORT… With two homers and a 2–run single,
Julia Garcia tied a school record with six RBIs in a game in Saturday's nightcap. She becomes the fourth Otter to accomplish the feat.
Alyssa D'Agostino was the last Otter to turn do so, driving in six in a win over Montana State Billings on Feb. 6, 2016.
THE LAST WORD… "These wins were huge and a great way to start the conference season. Sonoma is so well coached you can count on them being in the postseason mix, making these big games. We'll need more impressive performances like we received from Hayley and Julia today if were going to finish this series strong Sunday." –
CSUMB Head Coach Andrea Kenney
THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4–game set with Sonoma State by hosting a doubleheader Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
GO OTTERS!
