POMONA, Calif. — One-for-24. That's how Cal State Monterey bay opened Saturday's women's basketball game at Cal Poly Pomona shooting from the floor. The Otters simply couldn't overcome that frigid start as Pomona rolled to a 64–31 victory.
The 31 points were the fewest scored by the Otters at the NCAA level and the fewest overall since they scored 30 versus Fresno Pacific on Nov. 2, 2001.
CSUMB scored a school–record low two points in the first quarter–and those didn't come until an
Aubri Smith (Ventura College) jumper with less than two minutes remaining in the period. Things barely got better in the second quarter as the Broncos increased their lead to 28–9 by the half.
Brianna Tucker (Clovis North HS) came off the bench to lead CSUMB with 10 points.
Courtney Keaton (Bishop Montgomery HS) added three steals and two blocks to her team–leading 10 rebounds.
THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Dominque Dotson's 3–pointer made it 51–24 Cal Poly with 6:41 to play.
ON THE REBOUND… Courtney Keaton continued her impressive board work with a team–high 10 rebounds Friday night. It was her third consecutive game averaging in double figures. It marked the 11th time in 13 games this season that she has led the Otters on the glass.
ON THE DOWN LOW… CSUMB's 31 points Friday night are its low water mark for points at the NCAA level (dating back to the 2004–05 season). Their previous low as an NCAA program was 35 in a 55–35 NCAA Tournament loss to Grand Canyon on Mar. 12, 2011. The all–time record for fewest points in a game was 27 in a 58-27 loss to Cal State Hayward on Feb. 11, 2000.
ON THE DOWN LOW, QUARTERLY EDITION… The two points scored by the Otters in the first quarter Friday night set a school record for fewest points in a quarter. The previous record was four points against Chico State on Feb. 25, 2017. For what it's worth, the seven points scored in the second quarter rank No. 6 on that same list.
LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS:
Brianna Tucker 10; REBOUNDS:
Courtney Keaton 10; ASSISTS: 6 Players 1; BLOCKS:
Courtney Keaton 2; STEALS:
Courtney Keaton 3.
THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude the 2017 calendar year with a game at Cal State San Bernardino Saturday night in Coussoulis Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and the opener of men's/women's doubleheader action.
GO OTTERS!
