BOX SCORE CARSON, Calif. — Senior guard
Aubri Smith (Ventura College/Buena HS) continued her historic scoring run, but it wasn't enough to run Cal State Monterey Bay's win streak to three games as the Otters faded late in a 68–60 loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday night in The Torodome.
Smith scored a career–high 27 points for her fourth consecutive 20–plus point performance. She joins Helen Suarez as the only Otter women ever to accomplish that feat. Suarez scored in four straight from Jan/ 16–30, 2008.
Thanks to a 17–point first half by Smith, the Otters led for almost the entire half and led well into the third quarter. But the Toros got hot late in the third and finished the period on an 18–6 run to take the lead at 50–46.
Two buckets by Smith to open the fourth quarter drew the Otters level one last time, but consecutive 3–pointers by heaven Holmes begat a 13–0 run that CSUMB couldn't overcome.
THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… A pair of Jade Williams free throws made it 67–58 Toros with 30 seconds remaining.
THIS GIRL IS ON FIRE… Aubri Smith's 27 points not only mark her personal high, they are the eighth most points ever scored by an Otter. Dana Andrews owns the MB record of 41 points score at Cal State Dominguez Hills in 2008.
ICE, ICE BABY… The Otters failed to make a 3–pointer in this game, going 0–for–13 from beyond the arc. It's the first time they have failed to connect from long range since going 0–for–10 against Cal Poly Pomona on Jan. 11, 2013. That's a span of 132 games.
ICE, ICE BABY, PART II… It was a tough shooting night all–around for the Otters. Take
Aubri Smith out of the equation and the Otters were just 13–for–48 (.271) from the floor.
LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS:
Aubri Smith 27; REBOUNDS:
Courtney Keaton 10; ASSISTS:
Jordana Price/
Aubri Smith 3; BLOCKS: None; STEALS:
Jordana Price 3.
THE LAST WORD… "We played well in spurts tonight. We took rushed shots and never really got into a rhythm offensively. We did not execute our defensive game plan effectively resulting in 37 free throw attempts for Dominguez. They exposed us in some areas that we will work to improve this week for our games." –
CSUMB Head Coach Kerri Nakamoto
THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to the friendly confines of the Kelp Bed to host Dominican University for a Thanksgiving Eve tilt. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. Admission will be free for all fans.
GO OTTERS!
