SEASIDE, Calif. — A first half penalty kick from
Hannah Kind (Bakersfield Christian HS) and a late surge in the second half weren't enough as Cal State L.A. scored about 12 minutes on each side of the interval to earn a 2–1 win over Cal State Monterey Bay Friday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.
Irma Pinzon gave L.A. its first lead when she headed home a cross from Paulina Chaidez in the 34th minute. But the Otters leveled the score five minutes later when a Golden Eagle defender blocked an
Ashlee Cortez shot with her hand in the middle of the L.A. box to set up Kind's spot kick opportunity.
Golden Eagle keeper Adriana Maldonado guessed right but couldn't prevent Kind from tucking a well–struck effort inside the post for her fourth goal of the season.
The lead lasted less than 20 minutes, however, as another Chaidez cross found Pinzon's foot en route to the back of the net as the hour mark neared for what proved to be the match–winner.
The Otters turned up the pressure late, but couldn't find the equalizer despite four shots and a pair of corners in the final 22 minutes.
THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… The Golden Eagles successfully defended a corner kick from
Dio Ruiz in the 85th minute.
FOUR OF A KIND… Hannah Kind's goal was her career–high fourth of the season, tying
Haley Nishimoto for the team lead.
SPOT ON… Hannah Kind converted from the spot for the second time in her career. She scored the match winner via a PK at Cal Baptist on Sept. 3, 2016.
