TURLOCK, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball's scenic tour of Northern California continued with its second consecutive sweep, this time in the form of a 25–22, 25–15, 25–20 win at Stanislaus State Friday night in Fitzpatrick Arena.
CSUMB (11–6, 5–4 CCAA) won by sweep for the ninth time this season by holding off a pesky Stanislaus State side that kept the first and third sets close until the Otters pulled away late twice to complete the victory.
The Otters never trailed by more than one point in any of the three sets. Stanislaus managed to remain close throughout the first set before nearly rallying back from a 20–13 deficit in the third. But a Warrior service error and an Underwood kill stalled the final Stanislaus rally at 22–20 before
Ashlynne Armstrong (Norco HS) fourth ace of the night ended the match.
Senior
Amber Tygart (Yucaipa HS) continued her strong run of play by leading a balanced offense with nine kills. Freshman
Baylie Pierson (Vista Murietta HS) gave a solid performance in her second start in place of injured
Chandler McKean, posting a season–high seven kills.
Maddy Underwood (Spokane, Wash./Mead HS) and
Anela Visesio (Seaside HS) added eight kills apiece.
THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN…
Baylie Pierson's final kill of the night gave the Otters a 20–13 lead in the third set. Although Stanislaus rallied late, it never got closer than two points the rest of the way.
BRENNAN REMAINS UNBLEMISHED… Samantha Brennan continued a remarkable streak after posting a hitting line of three kills, no errors and eight attacks Friday at Stanislaus. She hasn't made a single error in her last 71 swings over seven matches. Her line over that span of 35–0–71 (.495). The impressive streak raised her attack percentage to a gaudy .356 for the year.
THEY'RE A HIT… Led by
Samantha Brennan and
Erica Chapa, who hit .375 Friday night, the Otters hit .257 at Stanislaus, marking the 10th time this season they have hit .250 or better. They broke the record for most times hitting .250 or better in school history (8) set by the 2009 and 2013 teams.
