ARCATA, Calif. — A week–long, 3–match roadtrip began with a bang as Cal State Monterey Bay completed a season–sweep of Humboldt State with a 25–15, 25–14, 25–17 win over Humboldt State Tuesday night in Lumberjack Arena.
CSUMB improved to 10–6 overall and moved to within one–half game of second–place Cal State East Bay in the CCAA North Division at 5–4. Humboldt fell to 3–13 and 2–8.
Senior
Maddy Underwood (Spokane, Wash./Mead HS) topped the Otter box score with a 12–kill, 12–dig double–double, her sixth of the season.
Ashlynne Armstrong (Norco HS) chipped in 16 digs,
Paige Burrell (Ripon HS) added three aces and
Erica Chapa (San Benito HS/Gavilan College) had 29 assists and six kills.
The Otters jumped to early leads in the first two sets before Humboldt made things interesting early in the third. But a 6–1 run midway through the frame broke the set open and allowed CSUMB to roll.
THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… a pair of blocks by
Samantha Brennan and
Amber Tygart keyed a 6–1 run that opened a 17–10 Otter lead in the third set.
BRENNAN REMAINS UNBLEMISHED… Samantha Brennan continued a remarkable streak after posting a hitting line of five kills, no errors and 12 attacks Tuesday at Humboldt. She hasn't made a single error in her last 63 swings over six matches. Her line over that span of 32–0–63 (.508). The impressive streak raised her attack percentage to a gaudy .343 for the year.
THEY'RE A HIT… Led by
Samantha Brennan, the Otters hit .283 Tuesday night, marking the ninth time this season they have hit .250 or better in 2017. They broke the record for most times hitting .250 or better in school history set by the 2009 and 2013 teams.
