Kind’s Penalty Kick Enough in 1-0 Win Over CBU

Kind now has two goals in as many games to start the season

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team went into its first road game of the 2016 season looking to improve on a 1-0 record. The Otters faced off against Cal Baptist for the first time in program history and started off with a good first impression.

Hannah Kind (Bakersfield Christian HS) found the back of net in the 22nd minute after being fouled inside the box leading to a penalty kick. The successful PK was Kind's second goal of the season in as many games and gave the Otters a 1-0 lead.

The penalty kick proved to be all CSUMB would need as the Otters played a pesky defense. Victoria Whyte (Austin, Texas/Lake Travis High School) recorded two saves en route to her fourth career shutout.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN... Despite being peppered by the CBU offense late in the game, the Otter defense was able to block the final shot of the game in the 89th minute to secure the shutout

TWO AND OH... With today's win, the Otters now hold a 2-0 record for the first time in program history.

QUOTE FROM COACH... "The team deserves a lot of credit on this win. We played a very good Cal Baptist team and found a way to win. It's one step closer to our team goal to get to our conference tournament. We will keep getting better." – Head Coach Erin Reinke

THEY'VE GOT NEXT... The Otters will stay on the road heading into next Thursday, Sept. 8 when they head to Azusa Pacific for a game beginning at 7:30 p.m.

HAT TRICK (3 FACTS FROM TODAY'S MATCH)
  1. In the 22nd minute, Hannah Kind netted the first successful Otter penalty kick since last season vs. Saint Martin's.
  2. Goalkeeper, Tori Whyte, recorded her fourth career shutout after blanking three teams in her freshman campaign in 2015.
  3. This was the first meeting between the Otters and Lancers and with the win, CSUMB now holds a 1-0 edge in the overall series
