POMONA, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team battled with Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday afternoon as part two of its four game road trip. In the first half, CSUMB recorded just one shot on goal in five tries, leading to a scoreless first half.
As the second half went on, it looked like it might turn into the Otters fourth overtime game in a row, however, the Broncos' Sergi Monso was able to net a free kick 20 yards out, giving CPP a 1-0 edge in the 87 minute.
Despite an Otter corner kick and one final shot attempt from
Nick Stanley (Yucaipa HS), CSUMB was unable to find the back of the net as the game ended in a 1-0 loss.
THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN... While the Broncos scored with less than three minutes remaining, CSUMB was able to get one final shot off at the 89:09 mark. Stanley's shot went wide, marking the end of the Otter threat and the game.
NOT FOR LACK OF TRYING... CSUMB has not scored a goal since the 74th minute against San Francisco State on Sept. 14. But it has not been a lack of trying. In the last three games, CSUMB has recorded 51 shots without a score
THE LAST WORD... I am proud of the boys. We out played them and had our chances to score but could not convert. Credit to CPP for hitting a great set piece shot. We played with a lot of heart. –
Rob Cummings, CSUMB Men's Soccer Head Coach
THEY'VE GOT NEXT... CSUMB will return to Southern California next weekend for matchups against Cal State L.A. (Sept. 30) and Cal State Dominguez Hills (Oct. 2)
