SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Despite besting the San Francisco State Gators in shots on goal (6-3), the Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team could not find the back of the net on Wednesday afternoon at Cox Stadium.
SFSU, however, found its score early in the first half on a free kick from Kelsey Wetzstein to give the Gators a 1-0 edge and eventual win.
CSUMB is now 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the CCAA.
THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN... A effort by
Mariya Fefilova (Turlock HS) went wide left in the Otters' final attempt to get on the board with less than five minute remaining.
DOUBLE DIP... Taylor Greenwood (Norco HS) led CSUMB with two shots on goal, bringing her season total to five, a 71.4% SOG percentage (5-of-7)
SEEING SOME TIME... Six of the 15 players that coach Reinke used in today's game played the entire 90 minutes, including freshman GK
Alyssa Noh (Aliso Niguel HS). Noh also made two saves.
THAT'S A DEEP SQUAD... On the other hand, SFSU used a total of 22 players in the win with two players totaling 90 minutes
THE LAST WORD... "At the end of the day, we shot ourselves in the foot starting slow, uninspired and giving up an early goal. Our second half performance was much stronger all around, but making up a goal deficit on the road during conference play was too much to overcome. We need to start games sharper and with more energy and be a tougher team to play against." —
CSUMB Head Coach Erin Reinke
THEY'VE GOT NEXT... The Otters will interrupt their conference schedule for a non-conference date with Academy of Art on Friday, Sept. 16 at the Otter Sports Complex. Kickoff is set for noon.
GO OTTERS!
