SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team completed its first game in over a week with Monday afternoon's 1-0 win against Academy of Art at Beach Chalet Field.
The Urban Knights gave the Otters everything they had as the two teams stayed tied at zero deep into the game. Things got a little chippy in the second half as dual red cards were handed out, leaving both teams with 10 players on the field for the final 23 minutes.
CSUMB finally broke the tie in the 86th minute on a ball that
Israel Ayala (San Jose State) slotted into the left side of the net for the first and only goal of the game in the Otters 1–0 victory.
Andrew Garcia (San Jose State) and
Jake Hansen (Santiago HS) split time in goal and recorded a combine three saves.
THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN... Israel Ayala (San Jose State) netted the game-winning goal in the 86th minute, despite being a down to 10 men on the field.
NOT HIS FIRST RODEO...Ayala is no stranger to game winners. The senior midfielder scored the game-winner against Cal State East Bay on September 18, 2015 as his first goal as an Otter in a 2–1 win.
QUOTE FROM COACH... It wasn't a very clean game. We have to continue to get better, but we will take any win on the road. We had a chance to play a lot of guys as well, which is good. We were slow in the first half, but had a much better effort in the second half. In the course of the a season you have to win some ugly games and we did that today. –Head Coach
Rob Cummings
A TALE OF TWO HALVES... The Otters were out shot in the first half, 8–2, but came out firing in the second half with 10 shots, holding AAU to two.
THEY'VE GOT NEXT... The Otters will remain on the road, but now in the conference setting. Cal State Monterey Bay will battle the Gators of San Francisco State on Wednesday, September 14 at 12:30 p.m. in S.F.
GO OTTERS!
