SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team headed to The City by the Bay for the CCAA opener on Wednesday afternoon as they battled the San Francisco State Gators (3–1) at Cox Stadium. The offense sparked early, but CSUMB could not hold on to the lead in regulation. CSUMB fought in overtime, but SFSU found the goal handing CSUMB a 3-2 loss.
CSUMB did not waste any time as
Israel Ayala (San Jose State) netted his second goal in as many games at the 3:31 mark to give the Otters a 1-0 edge. It looked like Monterey Bay would head into intermission with the 1-0 lead in tact until the Gators' Sam Gebremiche found the back of net at the 43:45 mark and tied the game at 1-1.
The Gators' Ranier Plantinos gave SFSU the 2-1 lead 12:12 into the second half as CSUMB goalie
Andrew Garcia (San Jose State) came to far out of the box, leaving an empty net.
Branddon Cando (El Camino College) tied the game for the Otters in the 74th minute off a free kick that bounced its way through defenders and into right net to make a 2-2 game.
The game remained at 2-2 as the two teams headed to overtime, the Otters second OT game in the young season. However, OT did not last long as the Gators' Richard Leon netted his third goal of the season 56 seconds into the extra period, devastating CSUMB with a 3-2 loss.
THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN... San Francisco State's Richard Leon netted the golden goal 56 second into the first overtime period
AYALA WITH THE GOAL... With his goal today,
Israel Ayala now has two goals in as many games. It is also his second goal of the season which is one more than he scored in 2015
QUOTE FROM COACH... Credit goes to SFSU. They played well. I was disappointed today because I felt we played as individuals instead of playing as a unit. We will look to regroup on Sunday. –Head Coach
Rob Cummings
