SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team opened the 2016 season with a familiar opponent in Notre Dame de Namur whom they've played in the opener for the fourth consecutive season.
The Argonauts got on the board first with a goal in the 31st minute to take a 1-0 lead in the first half. However,
Hannah Kind (Bakersfield Christian HS) and
Ashlee Cortez (Trabuco HS) would remedy that in the second half.
Kind netted the equalizer after seeing open field due to an excellent entry pass by
Mariya Fefilova (Turlock HS) to knot the score at 1-1 in the 47th minute. In the 72nd minute, Cortez found pay dirt after an assist from Kind allowed the junior to set up a bullet into the back of the net. The Otter defense held tight in the final minutes despite multiple attempts from NDNU to tie, leading to a 2-1 win.
THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN... The Otter defense kept the Argonauts out of the net recording a team save on potential game-tying header in the 85th minute.
SECOND HALF SURPRISE... The Otters came out of the intermission on a mission, scoring twice in the second half while shutting out NDNU.
THEY'VE GOT NEXT... After starting the 2016 season in the friendly confines of the OSC, the Otters will head to south for a date with Cal Baptist set for Saturday, Sept. 3 at noon.
