STOCKTON, Calif. -- If you're superstitious, you can blame this loss on it being Friday the 13th. If you're not, chalk it up to a tired offense after playing a long, emotional game the night before. Either way you look at it, the Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team was eliminated from the CCAA Championship Tournament by Chico State, 2-4, on Friday afternoon at Banner Island Ballpark.
Chico State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, taking a page out the Otter's book by scoring first. CSUMB broke through in the fourth inning on an RBI single by
Hayden Duer (Davis HS) to tie the game a 1-1. The Wildcats answered back with a two spot in the fifth inning on one swing of the bat. Chico's Dillon Kelley drove a ball over the left center field fence for a 2-run homer, to give the 'Cats a 3-1 edge.
Chico starter Hunter Haworth threw well in his fifth win of the season (5-0) and kept the Monterey offense at bay. Haworth pitched eighth strong innings allowing two runs on five hits.Â
Matt Urakami (Branham HS) unleashed on 2-1 pitch from Haworth for his third home run in as many weeks to bring the Otters within two runs, 2-4. However, the big fly could not electrify the Otter bats, as CSUMB went three up, three down in the top of the ninth to end the game.
The long ball was Urakami's only hit of the afternoon while Duer put together a 2-hit afternoon with an RBI.
Jared Koenig (Aptos HS) took the loss after allowing three runs on six hits in five innings of work. The loss was Koenig's first of the season (3-1).
Monterey Bay still has hopes of making the NCAA West Regional Tournament as one of the top six teams in the region. Monterey Bay came in this week as the No. 4 team in the West. The NCAA Selection Show will take place on Sunday night at 7:00 p.m. on
