STOCKTON, Calif. -- The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team faced off against UC San Diego in the first game of the CCAA Championship Tournament for the second consecutive year. This time, the Otters got the better of the Tritons in an offensive show and 11-7 win on Wednesday night at Banner Island Ballpark.
CSUMB wasted no time in scoring runs, plating seven in the bottom of the first. In fact, eight of nine Otter batters reached base in the first frame.
Bryan Bostjancic (Sir Francis Drake HS) led things off with a single and was brought home on a
Kevin Davidson (Yucaipa HS) 2-run shot to left. That set the tone for the game as
Justin Flores (Clovis West HS) doubled and was followed up by a
Hayden Duer (Davis HS) 2-run shot. Davidson and Duer now have 11 and 12 home runs, respectively, on the season, both of which are single season record. An
A.C. Nunez (Roosevelt HS) RBI single and a Bostjancic 2-RBI double finished off the 7-run inning and chased UCSD starter Jonah Dipoto out of the game.
CSUMB scored twice more in the third inning and twice more in the fourth inning, this time on a
Chris Blanton (Burlingame HS) 2-run big fly giving CSUMB three home runs and a 11-2 lead. Otter starter
Gabe Katich (Mount Pleasant HS) threw well in the early inning with three innings of scoreless ball. Katich's final line included six strikeouts and five earned runs in four a one-third innings.Â
A combination of three different reliever's allowed UCSD to score just twice more in the final four and two-thirds innings with the Tritons plating two in the top of the ninth.
Kyle Narahara (Castro Valley HS) was able to get the final out and secure the 11-7 victory.
Steven Zaharias (Brentwood, Calif.) got the win after throwing one and two-third innings of shutout ball with a strikeout.
The Otters will get the night cap again on Thursday and will battle the No. 2 seed Cal State East Bay who beat Cal State San Bernardino 13-2 on Wednesday. It will be the fifth time Monterey Bay and the Pioneers will face off in the last week. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
