TURLOCK, Calif.—A pair of tens were good enough for the Cal State Monterey Bay softball team to win both hands it played on Day 2 of the Tournament of Champions at Pedretti Park Saturday. The Otters took care of longtime rival Hawaii Pacific 10–5 in their afternoon game before earning a 10–0 run–rule victory over Holy Names in their nightcap.
The Otters won in all phases of the game. They scored double-digit runs in consecutive games for the second time this season, rapping 14 hits in both contests for good measure. In the circle,
Bianca Noriega (Camarillo HS) fanned a career–high 10 for her seventh win in the opener against HPU while
Tori Pierucci (San Mateo/Hillsdale HS) tossed a 1–hitter to beat Holy Names for her ninth victory.
The Otters came from behind twice before finally putting the hammer down against Hawaii Pacific. Noriega's RBI double started a 4-run fifth inning that broke a 2–2 tie.
Anneliese Lopez (Ventura/Buena HS) hit her fourth homer of the season, a 3-run shot, to ice the game in a 4-run sixth.
The nightcap required no such drama as Pierucci was in complete control. The only hit she allowed was a seeing-eye single up the middle with one out in the third. She allowed only two base runners.
The Otter offense collected five hits through the first three innings but didn't break through until doubles by
Chase Robredo (Camarillo HS) and
Jayme Stark (La Quinta HS) sparked a 2-run fourth.
Madison Casto (Sunnyvale/Homestead HS) doubled twice in an 8-run fifth inning explosion. Both Casto and
Valerie Aguilar (Montebello HS/ELAC) contributed 3-run doubles to the rally.
Casto, Robledo, Noriega and Stark each collected four hits Saturday. Lopez had four RBIs against HPU while Casto and Aguilar each had three against HNU.
The Otters will close play at the Tournament of Champions Sunday with games against Western Washington (noon) and Notre Dame de Namur (2:30 p.m.).
GO OTTERS!
