Otters Run Win Streak To Five Games

Wins over Western Washington and NDNU cap play at the TOC

TURLOCK, Calif.—The Cal State Monterey Bay softball team won big and small Sunday afternoon to conclude play at the 2016 Tournament of Champions with a pair of victories. The Otters earned a key regional win by defeating Western Washington 3–2 before pounding 15 hits in a 13–1, 5-inning win over Notre Dame de Namur at Pedretti Park.

The Otters ran their win streak to a season–high five games and moved a season–high four games over .500 (20–16).

Sophomore Chase Robledo (Camarillo HS) went 8-for-15 (.533) with two doubles and a home run to earn all–tournament honors. She raised her batting average to a team–leading .409 for the season with her weekend's effort.

Senior Bianca Noriega (Camarillo HS) earned both victories Sunday. she tossed 3 2/3 innings of 1-hit, 5-strikeout relief to seal the win over Western Washington. She allowed two hits and no runs while splitting pitching duties versus NDNU with freshman Rosalia Keirns (Claremont HS).

Madison Casto's (Sunnyvale/Homestead HS) singled home Courtney Varela (Torrance HS) to stake the Otters to a first inning lead against Western. An Anneliese Lopez (Ventura/Buena HS) double and Robledo sacrifice fly extended the lead to 3–0 in the third.

The Vikings rallied for two runs in the fourth before Noriega came in to retire 11 of the 13 batters she faced, including the last six in order.

The finale versus NDNU held little drama after Varela tripled and scored to open the Otter first. A 2-run double by Noriega capped a 6-run second inning. Jayme Stark (La Quinta HS) stole home to highlight a 3-run third inning. A Valera RBI single in the fourth put a cherry on the 13-run outburst.

CSUMB returns home to resume CCAA play this weekend when it hosts Cal State San Bernardino in a 4-game set beginning Friday at 1 p.m.
