TURLOCK, Calif. — The Otter baseball team took its fans on a wild ride Monday afternoon. When the dust finally settled, eighth ranked Cal State Monterey Bay was basking in the glow of a 13–9, 10–7 sweep at CCAA contender Stanislaus State.
The wins pull CSUMB (21–6, 10–5 CCAA) within one half game of Chico State atop the CCAA North Division Standings. Stanislaus, which began the day just two games back of the Otters, fell to 14–12 and 7–9.
Big innings led the Otters to comeback wins in both halves of the doubleheader. The Otters erased a 5–3 deficit in the opener with a season–high 10–run eighth inning en route to their first win. They used a 6–run fifth inning to climb out of a 7–2 hole in the nightcap.
CSUMB nearly set an ignominious record in the opener, getting hit by five pitches, just one off the school record. Four of those came in the climactic eighth inning rally, helping the Otters put up a 10 spot despite just collecting just six hits in the frame.
The big play in the rally wasn't a hit—or a hit by pitch—but was a hustling effort by
Bryan Bostjancic (College of Marin) to beat the relay on what appeared to be a sure inning–ending double play grounder. Bostjancic's hidden gem not only allowed the tying run to score on the play, in kept the inning alive for an energized Otter offense which added eight more runs with two outs.
Game 2 saw the Otters fight their way from behind twice.
Will Rosado's (Clovis/Fresno CC) third homer of the season—a 2-run blast—knotted the game at 2–2 in the third inning. Stanislaus responded immediately, scoring three in its half of the third and two more in the fourth to take a commanding 7–2 lead.
The second Otter comeback begin with, oddly enough, another hit batter. This time Warrior reliever Chris Senn plunked Rosado with the bases loaded to drive in the first run. A 2-run double by
Kevin Davidson (Yucaipa HS) and a 2-run single off the bat of
Chris Blanton (Burlingame HS) capped the rally with the Otters leading 8–7.
Davidson laced a 2-RBI single through the right side in the sixth inning to close the scoring.
Matt Urakami (San Jose/Branham HS) went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI in the opener. He walked and scored following all three of his plate appearances in Game 2.
Jeffery Amaral,
Justin Flores and
Ruben Gonzalez each had two hits while combining for seven RBIs in the opener. Davidson (4), Rosado (3) and Blanton (2) combined for nine of the 10 Otter RBIs in the nightcap.
CSUMB continues its 5-game roadtrip with a big 3-game series at CCAA South Division leading Cal Poly Pomona (19–9, 11–6). The Otters and Broncos will meet twice on Saturday before playing a single game Sunday.
The Otters return home to host Cal State San Bernardino Apr. 9–10.
GO OTTERS!
