FRESNO, Calif.. -- The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team wrapped up its nonconference schedule on Tuesday evening against the Sunbirds of Fresno Pacific. Backed by an impressive performace by senior first baseman
Kevin Davidson (Yucaipa HS), CSUMB was able to take care of the Sunbirds in a 5–2 victory.
Davidson and the Otter offense started the scoring quickly, as the Yucaipa native double in a run in the first inning, giving CSUMB a 1–0 lead early on. Fellow senior,
Justin Flores (Fresno, Calif. / Clovis West HS) knocked in the second run of the game for the Otters in the third inning off FPU starter Josh Medeles.
Davidson was not finished with one RBI. In the fifth inning after an error allowed
Zakry Taylor (Madera HS) to reach and
Will Rosado (Clovis East HS) was hit by a pitch,
Myles Hager (Tarzana, Calif / Chaminade College Prep) singled to load the bases. With no where to put him, the Sunbirds were forced to pitch to Davidson. The Otter first baseman drove a 2–0 pitch into the right center gap, clearing the bases for three RBIs and his third double of the game.
Fresno Pacific managed to score twice in the bottom of the eighth inning off of CSUMB reliever
Daniel Thomas (Ventura, Calif. / Saint Bonaventure HS). But two runs would be all the Sunbirds could muster as
Kyle Narahara (Castro Valley HS) came in in the ninth inning and shut the door, earning his thrid save of the season.
Davidson finished the game going 3–for–4 at the plate with three doubles and four of the five Otter RBIs. It is the first time since Steve Mays in 2009 that an Otter player has doubled three time in a game. CSUMB used six pitchers in the game.
Nick Milone (Northridge, Calif. / Chatsworth HS) was credited with the win after two scoreless innings.
The Otters end thier nonconference season with a program best 11-1 record. Monterey Bay will begin the conference schedule on Friday at #23 Chico State.
