SAN FRANCISCO — The Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team came up with a big performance when it needed one most, staying in the thick of the CCAA Tournament chase with a 25–20, 25–22, 25–13 win at San Francisco State Saturday night in The Swamp.
Freshman
Samantha Brennan (Huntington Beach HS) was the only player to reach double figures in kills (10) in a balanced Otter attack.
Maddy Underwood (Spokane, Wash./Mead HS) and
Anela Visesio (Seaside HS) each chipped in nine kills.
Junior defensive specialist
Paige Burrell (Ripon HS/Nyack College) added three aces and a team–high 12 digs while Brennan led the net defense with three blocks.
THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Maddy Underwood put down a kill then went to the service line with the Otters leading 11–9 in the third set. She served five consecutive points to put the Otters comfortably ahead as part of a 15–4 CSUMB run to close the match.
HOW SWEEP IT IS… Saturday's win was the second sweep of the season for the Otters (10–10, 5–8 CCAA). It marked the first road sweep for the Otters since a 25–17, 25–23, 26–16 win at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sept. 27, 2014, a span of 25 road matches.
HOW LOW CAN YOU GO… The 13 points allowed by the Otters in the third set matched the fewest points they've allowed in a set this season. The Otters also held the Gators to 13 points in the second set of their sweep on Sept. 23 in The Kelp Bed
