SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team overpowered UC Santa Cruz on Saturday afternoon in a 1-0 nonconference win at the Otter Sports Complex.
It took CSUMB 55:27 seconds to find the back of the net, but with the help of
Karlee Neer (Torrance, Calif./West HS),
Ashlee Cortez (Rancho Santa Margarita HS) was able to score her fourth goal of the season, giving the Otters a 1-0 lead in the second half. Cortez's goal would hold as CSUMB went on to shutout the Banana Slugs, 1-0.
THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN... UC Santa Cruz took its final shot of two in the second half with 3:42 remaining in the game. The Otters shut down the Banana Slug offense allowing them just four shots in the game.
RECORD BREAKER NO. 1... The Otters took a cornucopia of shots, 28 to be exact, breaking the MB record of shots in a game by three (25). The previous record was set in 2013 against Fresno Pacific. CSUMB got close to the record earlier this season when they hung 22 shots on Academy of Art back on Sept. 16
RECORD BREAKER NO. 2... Not only did she score the lone goal of the game, but Cortez also took a record eight shots. Cortez edged out the previous record of seven, set by Jami Murray against Notre Dame de Namur on Sept. 4, 2014.
THEY'VE GOT NEXT... The Otters will welcome Stanislaus State to the Otter Sports Complex on Thursday, Oct. 27. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m.
