Otters Hit Wall Late As UCSD Rallies To Win In 4

Otters take first set and nearly take second before Tritons rally

POSTMATCH REACTION AND HIGHLIGHTS vs. UCSD

SEASIDE, Calif. — Friday night's marathon versus San Marcos took its toll on the Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team Saturday night as the Otters hit a wall midway through the match, allowing UC San Diego to rally for a 18–25, 25–22, 25–15, 25–12 win in The Kelp Bed.

CSUMB (7–6, 2–4 CCAA) led for virtually the entire first set before playing through 12 ties and five lead changes in a taut second set. But UCSD (8–5, 5–0) forged a late lead to even the match before pulling away midway through the third set to take control.

Maddy Underwood (Spokane, Wash./Mead HS) and Anela Visesio (Seaside HS) led a balanced Otter offense with nine kills apiece. Underwood added 10 digs and a match–high four aces.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Jessyka Beksa's kill broke a 9–9 tie in the third set. The Tritons never trailed again, out–scoring CSUMB 41–18 over the balance of the match.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Maddy Underwood 13.5.; KILLS: Maddy Underwood & Anela Visesio 9; ACES: Maddy Underwood 4; BLOCKS: Chndler McKean & Anela Visesio 2; DIGS: Ashlynne Armstrong 19.

SHE ACES… Maddy Underwood continues to tear it up at the service line. She matched her career high with four aces Saturday night, giving her a team–leading 22 for the season. That total ranks No. 2 in the CCAA.

THE LAST WORD… "I think a lot of our youth was visible tonight. I loved our response in Set 1. We played a really great first set and most of the second set as well and then we hit a wall in the third set. After last night's loss to a good San Marcos team, it was tough on us." — CSUMB Head Coach Moe Melhart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters hit the road for a pair in Southern California next weekend, beginning Friday, Oct. 7 at Cal State L.A. CSUMB returns home to host CCAA North Division leader Humboldt State Oct. 11.
